Background of the study
University class schedules are critical for the efficient management of academic activities, yet traditional timetable displays often fail to provide real‑time updates and interactive features. In Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State, an IoT‑based smart digital timetable display can revolutionize how students and faculty access scheduling information. By integrating IoT sensors, wireless networks, and dynamic display systems, these digital timetables offer real‑time updates, seamless integration with academic databases, and user‑friendly interfaces that ensure accurate and timely dissemination of class schedules (Adeniran, 2023).

This system not only improves communication but also reduces the likelihood of scheduling conflicts and miscommunications. The digital displays are capable of updating automatically in response to changes in class timings, room assignments, or cancellations, thereby enhancing overall operational efficiency (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, the integration of interactive features such as notifications, announcements, and emergency alerts further enriches the user experience, making it easier for students and staff to stay informed. The adoption of smart timetable systems is aligned with the broader digital transformation initiatives within the education sector, which aim to leverage technology to streamline administrative processes and improve academic outcomes (Olawale, 2023).

However, challenges remain in terms of initial capital investment, integration with existing campus IT infrastructure, and ensuring data accuracy and cybersecurity. The effective deployment of IoT‑based digital timetables requires a robust network, reliable hardware, and regular system maintenance to address potential technical issues (Chinwe, 2023). Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of improved communication, enhanced scheduling accuracy, and reduced administrative burden justify the exploration of such systems in university settings. This study seeks to evaluate the technical feasibility and operational advantages of implementing an IoT‑based smart digital timetable display in university classes in Keffi LGA, focusing on optimizing academic scheduling and resource allocation (Adeniran, 2023).

Statement of the problem
University classes in Keffi LGA often suffer from outdated timetable displays that do not reflect real‑time changes, leading to confusion, missed classes, and inefficient use of resources. Traditional static boards and printed timetables cannot adapt quickly to sudden schedule changes such as room reassignments, class cancellations, or emergency notifications (Ibrahim, 2024). The lack of a dynamic system results in communication gaps between administrators, lecturers, and students, ultimately affecting the overall academic performance and resource management.

In addition, the current systems do not integrate with other campus technologies, preventing seamless updates and timely dissemination of information. Financial constraints, limited technical support, and concerns regarding cybersecurity further exacerbate the challenges of updating and maintaining traditional timetable systems (Olawale, 2023). Moreover, these conventional methods are not interactive, leaving no room for real‑time engagement or feedback from the academic community. The need for a modern solution that leverages IoT technology to provide automated and accurate timetable displays is therefore critical.

This study intends to address these issues by investigating the potential of an IoT‑based smart digital timetable display system. The research will examine the technical requirements for system integration, identify operational challenges, and explore the benefits of real‑time updates for academic scheduling. By analyzing these factors, the study aims to propose a strategic framework that enhances the efficiency of timetable management and contributes to a more responsive and interconnected academic environment (Chinwe, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the limitations of current timetable display systems in university classes.

  2. To evaluate the feasibility of implementing an IoT‑based smart digital timetable display.

  3. To develop a comprehensive framework for enhancing academic scheduling efficiency.

Research questions

  1. What are the main shortcomings of traditional timetable displays in university settings?

  2. How can IoT‑based systems provide real‑time updates and interactivity?

  3. What technical and operational challenges must be addressed for effective implementation?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the potential of IoT‑based smart digital timetable displays to transform academic scheduling in university classes. The research provides insights into improving communication, reducing scheduling conflicts, and enhancing resource allocation. By proposing a robust framework for system implementation, the study offers practical recommendations for university administrators and IT professionals, fostering a more efficient academic environment and supporting the broader digital transformation agenda (Adeniran, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the design and evaluation of IoT‑based smart digital timetable displays for university classes in Keffi LGA, focusing on technical, operational, and economic aspects. Broader educational IT systems are not covered.

Definitions of terms

  1. IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that provide real‑time data.

  2. Digital Timetable: An electronic display that shows class schedules and updates automatically.

  3. Academic Scheduling: The process of planning and organizing class times and resources.
